Mary Lou Pape

Artist Statement

A love of the natural world has made animals the focus of my work. I am drawn to intimate views of wildlife and domestic animals and their surroundings, striving to portray the wonderful creatures sharing this planet with dignity and respect.

I use my own reference material, gathered from trips to National Parks and nature preserves. It is a thrill to discover these animals in the wild and then attempt to capture the image I have in my mind. I especially love to portray the way light illuminates the subjects, always mindful of anatomy and design.

I have studied with many of the top animal artists working today, including Greg Beecham, John Seery-Lester, Terry Issac, Robert Shufelt, and Luke Frazier. I work in oil, pastel and pencil, on location and in my studio in Monument, CO.
